Gog and Magog
1) The names of the two nations which will seek to destroy the kingdom of God, according to the Book of Revelation (20:8): 'Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle, the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.' During the 1240s, the Tatars were moving across Eastern Europe causing horrors and creating such fears that they became easily identified with Gog and Magog, the ferocious hordes of the biblical Apocalypse. Medieval legend had it that Gog and Magog had been locked up by Alexander the Great behind a gate in the Caspian mountains, as is depicted for example on the Hereford *mappa mundi. At the end of time they would break free, as Revelation described. -

2) Two large wooden figures in the Guildhall in London; they are said to represent the giants destroyed by *Brutus, legendary founder of Britain and London. This legend is unrelated to the nations of the same names found in the Book of Revelation. -
